The Shameful Retreat--CRD

The Shameful Retreat--CRD

Shame claws its vile nails at your guilt-weighted heart

Your hands shake, but not from the cold

Today you have failed; on your family you’ve bailed

Today you’ve abandoned the gold

‘Come find it!’ they’d said.  ‘It’s all over the place!’

So you’d picked up and left home to see

But when you arrived, to your dreaded surprise

You’d been hoodwinked and  tricked and deceived

Icy weapons of the earth rise against you

As you tromp through the wintertime sleet

Though the pain that you bear cannot think to compare

To the shameful guilt of your retreat

Oh how you’d dreamed of the treasures you’d find

They were, as you know, your last chance

Now upon your return, your family will  learn

Of their unchanging lack of finance

For now you must face them and tell them the truth

You could not save them as you’d sweared

You had thought you’d succeed, no more would they need

But for  failure you’d been unprepared

The terrain was quite rugged, like your own bristly cheeks

But the journey you paid little mind

The thoughts filling  your head, regarded instead

All the Yukon-bound gold left behind
